Since the Mustang was an all new model line and Ford knew they had a winner on their hands, production started in March of 1964 even though Federal VIN's declared them all 1965's. The Fastback Coupe didn't come out until 1965 and wasn't in the initial plans. However, when Iacocca saw the model he replied, “We've got to do it!” He was a smart man.
